Thanks to your bike you will pedal on not too busy paved road from the northern border of Umbria with Tuscany and Emilia Romagna and through gentle descents you will reach the main Umbria Valley.
The itinerary follows mostly the valley of the most important among Italian rivers, the Tevere; along its shores the roman empire developed and flourished for many centuries and the river itself was a vehicle of culture for more than 2000 years!
From Pieve Santo Stefano you will descent to the valley to reach San Giustino, Umbertide, the suburbs of Perugia, Marsciano, Todi, magnificent Orvieto and Montefalco, the city center of Spoleto and finally the quiet shores of Lake Trasimeno, where you will relax for a couple of days at the end of the journey!

Day 1: PIEVE SANTO STEFANO

Arrival in Umbria with your own car or by airplane to Perugia Airport . Arrival or transfer to PIEVE SANTO STEFANO and accommodation in your hotel. Pieve Santo Stefano is a nice village surrounded by Apennines mountains at the border between Umbria and Emilia Romangna. Not too far from here two important rivers originates: the Arno, that flows toward Florence, and the Tiber, the river of Perugia and Rome. If you have reserved bike rental, you will meet our assistance and you will receive your bikes in Hotel together with all details of your journey! Time for a nice relaxing walk around Pieve Santo Stefano.

 

Day 2: from PIEVE SANTO STEFANO to UMBERTIDE

After breakfast you will start your journey. First ride: PIEVE SANTO STEFANO – UMBERTIDE, through San Giustino. Arrival in Umbertide and accommodation in the center of the small renaissance town. Umbertide is situated in the Umbria Valley, along the Tiber river and the city center has ancient roman origins. UmbriAction suggests to pay a visit to wonderful Montecorona Abbey, in the outskirt of the town, under Monte Acuto. It is a wonderful Abbey that dates back to the XI century and has an amazing cripta!

Day 3: from UMBERTIDE to MARSCIANO

After breakfast you will have your second ride: UMBERTIDE – MARSCIANO via Ponte San Giovanni ( a quarter of Perugia in the valley). From Umbertide you will follow paved secondary roads that will take you first to Ponte San Giovanni. From here you will continue pedaling and discovering beautiful Deruta on your left hand. Deruta is worldly famous for the production of ceramics. The old medieval center is really nice for a stop or even for a snack or a lunch! From Deruta to Marsciano you will be again on the Tiber River Valley. Marsciano is a nice little town where bricks are produced since many centuries. Accommodation in a nice agriturismo.

Day 4: from MARSCIANO to ORVIETO

After breakfast you will take your bike again for the third ride: MARSCIANO – ORVIETO via Todi and the Corbara Lake. This is a wonderful ride of 65 km that will make you discover world famous Todi and amazing Orvieto! Today you have 2 options:
1) a secondary road on the ridge of the hills offering a beautiful view over the lake, the woods and the towns that only has  10 km of gentle ascent
2) if you don’t feel like it you can ride along the dam and the flat road of the Tiber River for discovering  Lake Corbara, that is an artificially created lake with the water of Tiber River.
Finally you will be in Orvieto, the Etruscan town situated on a large butte of volcanic tuff. Orvieto is famous for the amazing Cathedral and the Well of Saint Patrick, 54 mt deeps! Accommodation in hotel!  During your ride, UmbriAction even suggests a detour for visiting Todi. Todi is perched on  the top of a 400 mt high hill; you will have to climb for 3 km with 140 mt of difference in level but it really worth; Todi is one of the most beautiful medieval towns of Italy!

Day 5: from ORVIETO to SPOLETO

After breakfast you will start the fourth ride: ORVIETO – SPOLETO. Again on the Corbara lake Road and from here through a nice valley to avoid any  ascent you will reach Spoleto! Hard to choose between Orvieto and Spoleto! Two wonderful towns rich in history, traditions, atmosphere and good food! Orvieto is the town of White Wine, the Classic Orvieto, that was the first Italian wine to receive a protection label; Spoleto is the town of Red Sagrantino wine, a strong and really flavoured wine, among  the most important 5 wines in Italy ! Hard to choose! Taste to choose! We can arrange for you a visit to one of the most traditional wine estate in Orvieto and another one in Sagrantino Wine road! Arrival in Spoleto and accommodation in the center of the town!

Day 6: from SPOLETO to PERUGIA

After breakfast you will start your journey: SPOLETO  - PERUGIA. Km 80 along the smooth hills of the Sagrantino Wine road and than in Assisi Valley to  finally get to Perugia. It is also possible to arrange an overnight in Assisi for visiting the town. Very beautiful itinerary on paved secondary roads surrounded by wonderful old hamlets, vineyards, olive groves and Assisi! Perugia is the amazing and lively capital town of Umbria. The old historical city center is perched on 3 hills dominating the entire valley and dates back to the Etruscan age!  Accommodation in the center of Perugia and spare time for visiting the monuments: the underground town called Rocca Paolina, the major fountain, the Cathedral, San Francesco, the Etruscan walls and the gate!

Day 7: from PERUGIA to TRASIMENO LAKE

After breakfast, a new ride: PERUGIA – LAKE TRASIMENO . Easy gentle ride that you will personalize according to your need.
You can pedal 30 km or even 60 km. In the travel documents you will receive all instructions and suggestions to create your own itinerary from Perugia to the lake shores of Passignano or simply the standard itinerary to follow! It is also possible to stop in a wine estate for a nice wine tasting. Arrival in Passignano sul Trasimeno and accommodation in a cozy hotel in the very center of the old fisherme’s village! Passignano is now a famous holiday destination and there are many Cafés, restaurants and nice shops! This is the final stop of your journey throughout Umbria. It is also possible to extend you stay including one more day in Passignano to complete the ring around the Lake (65km-flat) or for visiting  Cortona, the beautiful Tuscan Town (km 35 to go - hilly).

Day 8: TRASIMENO LAKE

After breakfast, departure.
It is possible to arrange a transfer from Passignano to Pieve Santo Stefano if you have parked you car at the first accommodation. It is also possible to arrange a transfer from Passignano to Perugia Airport. Bike drop off in Hotel in Passignano!
