The Saint Francis Trail is a unique way to discover the beauty of Central Italy.
Following the story of the “poor man of Assisi” we will slowly walk along his steps from Tuscany to Rome through La Verna, Gubbio, Assisi, Rieti and many other wonderful places that he crossed during his life. This is a wonderful walking journey in Italian history, unspoiled nature and wonderful landascapes.
The first leg of this itinerary will take you from the heart of Renaissance, Florence, to the Casentino wood through La Verna, one of the most mystic places in the life of Saint’Francis.
Day 1: Florence
Day 2: From Florence to Pontassieve
Day 3: From Pontassieve to Consuma
Day 4: From Consuma to Stia
Day 5:From Stia to Badia Prataglia
Day 6: From Badia Prataglia to La Verna
Day 7: From La Verna to Pieve Santo Stefano

Day 1: FLORENCE
Arrival in Florence. Time to discover the beauty of this fantastic town, home of the Renaissance. Overnight in a centrally located hotel. (it is also possible to extend the stay in Florence including extra nights).
Day 2: From FLORENCE to PONTASSIEVE
Today you will start your journey to Sansepolcro. This first part of the trail is in Florence as far as Pontassieve, a suburb on the river Sieve.

Day 3: From PONTASSIEVE to CONSUMA
After breakfast you will start your hike to the Apennines. We climb through the vineyards of Chianti Rufina and then through the forests of the nearby Abbey of Vallombrosa to the Passo della Consuma (mt 1050).

Day 4: From CONSUMA to STIA
After breakfast you will start your hike to Stia that is a very nice little town with a long tradition in the production of a typical cloths made of wool. We begin today the crossing of the Casentino mountains, through coniferous, oak and chestnut woods; we descend into the upper Arno Valley and stop in the charming town of Stia.

Day 5: From STIA to BADIA PRATAGLIA
After breakfast you will start your hike to Badia Prataglia. Demanding stage that leads us to climb towards the forest of Casentino National Park surrounding the Sacred Hermitage of Camaldoli; after the visit, we continue among fir and beech forests climbing over the highest point of our journey (1354m) before descending to the mountain town of Badia Prataglia. Arrival in your hotel in this peaceful holiday destination and time to relax to enjoy the silence of mountains.

Day 6: From BADIA PRATAGLIA to LA VERNA
After breakfast departure to La Verna. La Verna preserves a very famous monastery that was built where Saint Francis received his stigmatas. Accommodation in Hotel and time to visit the monastery and the friars pharmacy.

Day 7: From LA VERNA to PIEVE SANTO STEFANO
The first stage of the journey into nature sung by St. Francis begins. Difficult gradients in the first 6 km, but the rest of the route is all downhill. Approach the pilgrim to the beauty of nature sung by Francesco. Pieve Santo Stefano is known as "the city of the diary" because it houses a fascinating public archive, which collects writings of ordinary people in which everyone's life and the history of Italy are reflected in various forms: these are diaries, letters, autobiographical memories.

Day 8: From PIEVE SANTO STEFANO to SANSEPOLCRO
The last leg of the itinerary is a pretty hard stage but the natural landscapes and the Franciscan Hermitages will become among the most beautiful memories of the journey. Sansepolcro is the final destination of this trekking on the footstep of saint francis. Its name refers to two pilgrims who returned from the Holy Land here and founded a monastic community. The city is a true treasure chest of beauty and preserves the precious works of Piero della Francesca, Rosso Fiorentino and other painters of the Renaissance.
